Virtual Escape Room: Top Tips

An online escape room is fantastic for team building or team socials when we can’t all be in one location.

In December, we helped Klarna host a virtual escape room that captured the imaginations of their partners with a personalised touch. It was a phenomenal success, with all the attendees thoroughly enjoying the team-bonding experience. The feedback we received from Klarna was wholly positive, with an emphasis on really strong engagement from all the participants, something that’s essential when delivering memorable experiences through a virtual events agency.

In this article, we outline the key considerations to keep in mind when planning a virtual escape room:

  1. Tell a unique story
  2. Personalise your escape room with a visual identity
  3. Bring a part of the experience to your audience
  4. Don’t forget the technical details

Tell a Unique Story

To make the event feel unique to Klarna, we worked with story developers and scriptwriters to create a bespoke storyline that fitted Klarna’s brand. We also had to ensure that the story was bite-sized – lasting 30 minutes – to ensure audience engagement. The story focused on a Black Friday narrative with the event being held the week after Black Friday itself, with the protagonist of the story being tasked with buying Christmas gifts for her boss’ husband.

This emphasis on shopping was in line with Klarna’s business and made the story more relevant to the brand and its partners. With Christmas shopping and a Christmas wishlist driving the story, we were able to make a subtle nod to Klarna’s own wishlist product. These subtle touches allowed us to weave threads of Klarna’s brand identity throughout and create an exclusive Klarna-only experience.

Personalise Your Escape Room With a Visual Identity

Visually, it was also important that we created a set in line with Klarna’s branding. Tying in with its visual identity of surrealist concepts, we decorated the set with quirky objects such as inflatable flamingos and doughnuts. Alongside the props and decorations, Bombora designed bespoke artwork for the clues which incorporated Klarna’s colour scheme and imagery.

Bring The Escape Room Experience To Your Audience

At Bombora, we believe that gifting attendees with a physical element can help bring virtual experiences to life. So we sent out party packs with branded Klarna products, drinks, as well as a map for the escape room. By giving the participants their own physical copy of the map, we were able to bring them closer to the interactive activity and bridge the gap between the physical and the digital — a technique frequently used in hybrid event production.

Don’t Forget The Technical Details

Bombora took care of all the technical elements of the virtual escape room, creating tailored solutions that would maintain the excitement of a physical escape room through a digital platform. In order to allow participants to really step into the shoes of our main character and interact, the actor was fitted with a GoPro attached to her head that was then operated remotely and connected remotely to the live stream.

This brought it all to life, giving attendees better access to explore the escape room alongside the protagonist; something best handled by a professional livestream agency.
