  • Webinars, webcasting and me.

Dictionary.com defines a ‘web·i·nar’ as a seminar that takes place over the internet, and a ‘web·cast’ as a live video broadcast of an event transmitted across the internet. However in most circles it seems that the terminology has become somewhat blurred and either are used to encompass both.

Back in 2007 I worked for a small investor relations firm, which helped listed companies promote their annual report to investors and communicate with their stakeholders. On joining the company though it was clear to see that the growth market was digital communications and in particular interactive reports and webcasting.

Webcasting allowed companies to report their results to a wider global audience in unison with their message. It gave stakeholders the choice to attend these presentations in person or through their computer. On demand versions of the presentations meant investors and journalists could refer back to it as appropriate. Webcasting simply made financial presentations better.

Speed forward to summer of 2011, I had moved company and was working for a leading business information provider who were on the verge of launching a new product that would revolutionise their service offering. As the product launch was a big deal for us we invested a sizeable amount into a launch event. We held it at a swanky London Venue, hired guest speakers, invited journalists and next to 200 clients and prospects.

Thinking we had done everything right me and the rest of the sales team were excited, after all we knew we had a top class product to show off. However out of the 200 invited guests only 69 attended, there was next to zero publicity and the all the expected momentum of a product launch event never came. We hadn’t recorded the event, so there was no assets to use for follow up, we had to go back to square one and cold call prospects.

Had we recorded the event we could have hosted the presentation, forwarded links to prospects, link it to social media sites and would have had something tangible to show for our investment that would continue to generate leads.

Instead all I have from that event is a nice picture of me and the guest speaker Nick Hewer

However we did learn, and a few months later run a webinar which generated 75 plus leads and provided the sales team with a tangible resource that would continue to provide qualified leads.
