  • Video & Teaching – The Perfect Partnership

At one extreme of the spectrum there is an element of luddism, which would see us all still writing with chalk on blackboards. Travel to the other end, and there seems a strange mix of wild futurist dreamers and commercial cowboys sniffing a quick buck, neither providing the reflection necessary to properly appraise and so shape the video learning landscape.

It will come as no surprise to you that, at bombora.tv, we sit at the enthusiastic end – yes, because we see the commercial benefit for ourselves of a greater demand for video content; but more so, because we have seen video work as a teaching tool. But this stance is not at the expense of the more traditional face-to-face, teacher led, physical interaction educational model. Indeed, it was interesting that many of the dissenting voices we were hearing came from teachers, lecturers and coaches, some of whom seemed rather threatened by video, as if they were on the verge of being replaced by robots.

Rather, we would argue that the whole debate needs to be reframed, and the starting point for that is to clarify two misconceptions. Firstly, it is wrong to see video as the preserve of online learning platforms. Certainly Moocs, the Khan Academy, and YouTube, to name just a few, cannot exist effectively, if at all, without video. But video has also been used to great effect in classrooms, lecture halls and corporate training suites for many years, weaving itself around more traditional text and print content to deliver multi-format learning experiences.

And once we accept that point, it helps us to debunk the second myth – that this is a competition between the video fuelled, bottom-up, mass participatory online world, and the top down, student limited, teacher controlled physical world. Rather, the opportunities being presented by video based learning, be it online or offline, serve to complement what’s already there.

Take the TED Conferences, a perfect example of where video has aided the convergence of the physical and online learning worlds with seamless beauty. To take just one element of the debate – the reach of video – TED lectures have now been viewed by 300m people. If nothing else, that power of video to educate the world and not just a tiny few, has to be a compelling point. And to prove that, a brilliant talk from their curator, Chris Anderson, on this very subject.

Video didn’t kill the radio star… and it won’t kill the classroom.
