  • Get Ready For The Workplace Of 2018

    1. It’s going to get personal

Remote working is so last year. Given the choice, Gen Z’s and millennials will choose a face-to-face chat over using technology, and they prefer corporate offices over telecommuting. Why? Because personal conservations are more effective and productive. Physical interactions spark creativity and help to build positive relationships. In fact, research suggests that one face-to-face conversation is the equivalent to thirty-four emails. So it’s no surprise that IBM have recently ditched their remote working plan and other big names have redesigned their workplaces. Expect employers to encourage more meet-ups, collaborations and face-to-face conversations.

    1. Mental well-being will be a priority

Financial stress, anxiety or depression affects productivity and ultimately costs money through days off. There is no longer any stigma attached to mental health issues; every workplace needs to support employees. Expect employers to encourage mindfulness, allowing time away from desks, fresh air or even meditation. As an employee you should be able to talk openly about workloads and any pressures. A happy workforce is a productive one.

    1. Retraining and up-skilling will be essential

Technology is moving faster than we dare to believe. The goal posts keep moving and our roles need to continuously evolve if we want to stay in the game. The skills we have are becoming less relevant over time; in fact almost half of all tasks people are paid to do everyday are at risk of being automated. The only way to fill this growing skills gap is for employers to invest more in the training and development of current workers.

    1. It’s time to get on the AI train

Chatbots are being used by more and more HR and customer service departments daily; this is set to grow even faster in 2018. For businesses, chatbots are an efficient solution that cut salary costs. For employees, they are a convenient and efficient method of communication. They can be used for a whole range of duties such as personal assistants, on-demand customer support, sorting data, streamlining business processes or answering employee questions.

    1. Non-traditional credentials will be more acceptable

With more and more young people opting to avoid debt and not go to university, there has been a rise in self-directed learning in the form of free or low-cost online courses. Younger generations are gaining the skills needed for jobs; they just need these credentials to be recognised by employers. If employers don’t adopt this change they may be left with fewer and less appealing options when recruiting.

    1. We need to embrace diversity

Employers need to create workforces that reflect the world today, supporting all types of diversity, including gender, ethnicity, disability and age. With diversity comes creativity, making the workplace a far more interesting and productive space.

    1. And don’t forget to respect your elders

They are going to be around for a long time; we’re living longer and retiring later. Research suggests that the number of over 65’s is set to triple by 2050. Businesses need to prepare for this, particularly around retirement benefits, healthcare and equal opportunities. For the younger generations this could mean promotions may be rare and vacancies scarce. Or it could spell the end for the older workforce. We’ll just have to wait and see, afterall, by the time Generation Z starts working, 65% of the jobs they will need to fill don’t even exist yet.
